Breaking Free from the Grip of Unhealthy Habits

What are unhealthy habits? Have you ever caught yourself engaging in those small, subtle behaviors that seem to sneak into your daily routine? These little quirks, often subconscious, can quietly hold you back from experiencing more joy and personal growth. Now, I’m not talking about overhauling your diet or summoning the motivation to tackle a new fitness goal this year—although, if those are your big goals, that’s fantastic! But let’s focus on something equally important: the foundation that supports all those changes.

As we say farewell to 2024, I encourage you to look a little deeper within yourself, where it all begins for absolutely everything we aim to accomplish. Our internal habits wield control over various aspects of our lives, from careers and relationships to house chores and our health goals. The habits we live by, healthy and unhealthy, silently shape everything we do and experience.

Take this time to reflect on the details of your day-to-day. What are some of your less optimal or unhealthy habits as we will call them, that unintentionally led you astray?

Let this be a simple reflection, bringing positivity to the coming year—embracing personal growth and understanding the habits that shape us.

Instead of dwelling on self-criticism, as it does not serve your highest self, consider these 5 unhealthy habits to leave behind in 2024 that we will examine closer.

  1. Unhealthy Habit: Procrastination

As we transition into a new year, let’s spotlight the pervasive unhealthy habit of procrastination, a shadow that often clouds our clarity. Procrastination is a habit you’ve learned, likely stemming from the fear of making the wrong choice or anxiety about the unknown. It’s unhealthy because it can spiral into a paralyzing state, hindering progress, causing indecision, and preventing forward movement.

As we bid adieu to 2024, let’s confront the roots of procrastination. What drives this habit? Is it perfectionism, fear of consequences, stress, or a lack of structure? Could it stem from negative beliefs, low confidence, or anxiety? Do you catch yourself asking, "what should I do with my life?"

If any of these elements contribute to your hesitation and delay in tackling tasks or goals, then recognizing any of these factors is your first step to breaking free from this common unhealthy habit that more than 95% of us experience.

Optimal Habit: The Power of Taking Action

Learning how to get out of the habit of procrastination means doing the exact opposite–taking immediate action, prioritizing tasks, or committing to consistency. Envision a transformative mindset—one that embraces the power of taking action and avoids the inertia of procrastination. Cultivate the grit to tackle tasks promptly by breaking down overwhelming projects into smaller, more manageable steps, transforming an intimidating mountain into a series of conquerable hills. This isn’t just about eliminating a habit; it’s about embracing the vitality that comes from actively engaging with life.

While procrastination is inherent in our nature, as University of Calgary psychologist Dr. Piers Steel outlines in his book “The Procrastination Equation,” the longer the delay, the less motivated we feel to take action. Steel emphasizes that we work harder and are more motivated when closer to realizing a goal.

Instilling a culture of action not only disarms procrastination but also harnesses the momentum needed for substantial progress. Picture the ripple effect—each completed task propels you forward, reinforcing a sense of accomplishment and self-efficacy. As we step into 2024, let the mantra be clear: procrastination has no place in the narrative of our success. It’s time to awaken the dormant force within—the power of taking action, to transcend the barriers that once held us captive.

  1. Unhealthy Habit: Multitasking (the Juggling Illusion)

Do you consider yourself a multitasker? If you’re anything like me and take pride in “getting it all done,” then read on. Let’s shine a spotlight on the unhealthy habit of believing in the illusion of multitasking. And by illusion, I mean exactly that. We often take pride in “multitasking,” but in reality, the brain doesn’t handle most tasks simultaneously. While simple, automatic tasks—like walking and listening to music or talking while you walk—can be done together without much mental effort, more complex tasks require the brain to switch between them, which often reduces efficiency and focus.

So why is multitasking an unhealthy habit? While it may seem like an efficient juggling act, the reality is that multitasking often yields subpar results and elevates stress levels. Over time, this habit of multitasking can become unhealthy, as it hinders our ability to concentrate and do tasks effectively. Our brains, intricate as they are, aren't designed to seamlessly handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously.

Multitasking often results in scattered focus, compromising the quality of our work and hindering productivity. So, what’s the allure of multitasking? Is it the pursuit of greater productivity, or the belief that we can accomplish more in less time? Acknowledging these questions is the first step toward dismantling the multitasking illusion—perhaps the elusive and unhealthy habit that many of us continue to chase.

Optimal Habit: Balance

Now, envision a more sustainable approach—replace multitasking with a dedicated focus such as on work-life balance. Prioritize tasks, establishing clear boundaries between work and personal life, allocating dedicated time to each aspect, fostering a healthier equilibrium. This optimal habit is not about spreading yourself thin across various tasks; it's about fostering a conscious balance that allows you to excel in both work and personal domains.

Single-tasking eliminates the illusion of multitasking, enhancing the quality of your work, reducing errors, and boosting productivity, both at home and in the office.

As we step into 2025, let the guiding principle be a harmonious balance, recognizing that true productivity lies not in the quantity of tasks juggled, but in the depth of focus and intention invested in each one.

  1. Unhealthy Habit: Gossiping

Gossiping—chances are, you’re already cringing at the thought of it. We’ve all been there, myself included, but engaging in negative gossip or excessive bragging is an unhealthy habit. While it may seem harmless in the moment, it can quickly create a toxic atmosphere and damage relationships. At its core, gossip often stems from a desire for validation or the need to boost oneself by putting others down, eroding the foundation of trust and healthy communication.

The end of the year is a time for introspection. So, ask yourself: have you found yourself gossiping or bragging more than you’d like to admit? If so, this self-awareness is the key to breaking free from toxic communication patterns. Once you recognize the pattern, you gain the power to change it.

Optimal Habit: Positive Communication

Now, picture a transformative shift, replacing the unhealthy habit of gossiping with a dedication to uplifting communication. Prioritize personal growth and self-awareness, whether through a mentor, personal coach, or a commitment to self-teaching. Cultivate effective communication skills that highlight constructive dialogue, fostering connections that uplift and inspire. I teach these in my group coaching program as valuable tools for transformation.

Uplifting, positive communication fosters healthy connections, building bridges instead of walls. By reframing conversations with other and those you have with yourself, be constructive and inspiring, contributing to a healthier, more supportive environment. As we step into 2025, let positive communication be the cornerstone, recognizing that building others up is not only a gift to them but also a gift to yourself.

  1. Unhealthy Habit: Being Distracted

Start the new year, off right by draw attention to the prevalent habit of being distracted, especially through mindless scrolling on social media. This seemingly harmless activity can and does quietly consume valuable time and contribute to feelings of inadequacy or FOMO (fear of missing out). Come on, you know the feeling.

Mindless scrolling is a silent thief, stealing moments that could be invested in more meaningful pursuits. I'm not talking about work related tasks. I'm referring to those late night, or mid-day procrastination scrolls. Ask yourself, why do you succumb to mindless scrolling? Is it a quest for connection or an unconscious escape from the present moment? Acknowledging these questions is the initial stride toward liberating yourself from the grip of distraction and promoting better emotional regulation.

Consider noting patterns in your scrolling habits—identify triggers or moments when it becomes a default action. Let go of the guilt scrolling may bring. Once you’re aware, try setting intentional limits on screen time or designate specific periods for focused, undistracted activities. These conscious steps can transform unhealthy habits into healthy ones and help you regain control over your attention.

Optimal Habit: Purposeful Engagement

You’re likely wondering what you should do instead. Easy—replace social media distractions with intentional and purposeful engagement. Allocate specific time for social media use, making it a mindful activity rather than a mindless, unhealthy habit. Redirect your focus toward practices that genuinely enhance your well-being and mindset.

Purposeful engagement is the antidote to the pitfalls of distraction. By setting boundaries and consciously choosing how you spend your time, you reclaim moments that can be invested in activities that align with your values and contribute to your overall happiness.

  1. Unhealthy Habit: Lack of Clarity in Life

Pausing for a moment, reflect on those daily unhealthy habits that might be influencing your path to joy and achieving a growth-mindset. Have you ever considered those small yet significant habits that could be holding you back from greater productivity and success? Sometimes, not having a positive habit can be an unhealthy habit in itself.

When our direction is unclear, our efforts can scatter, and our potential may remain untapped. However, by investing in personal development and critical thinking skills, you align with your authentic self. This commitment fosters a clear sense of direction and underscores the importance of consistent practice—far beyond the screen.

Optimal Habit: Goal Planning

The new year is a time to replace the unhealthy habit of lack of clarity with a commitment to purposeful goal planning and goal setting. First, ask yourself: Why do I drift without clear goals? Is it a fear of commitment or an uncertainty about your aspirations? Addressing these questions becomes the cornerstone for breaking free from the lack of clarity. Maybe you have tried to set and commit to new goals but just haven’t had much success.
